tour-guide Tour Guide

Thailand and Vietnam are both on almost every serious Southeast Asia shortlist — and for good reason. But they’re very different countries, and doing both in one trip is one of the smartest ways to experience the region.

Thailand comes first: two nights in Bangkok to shake off jet lag with temple runs and street food, then two nights in Phuket where the whole pace changes. The Phi Phi Islands speedboat day is the kind of afternoon that becomes the best photo in your phone — turquoise water, limestone cliffs, and nothing resembling a schedule.

Then Vietnam, which surprises almost every American who visits. Ho Chi Minh City (still called Saigon by most locals) is louder, rawer, and more electric than people expect — the motorbike city tour here is one of the best ways to actually understand how the city moves. Hanoi is the contrast: older, quieter, more European in its bones, with a lake at its center and an Old Quarter that rewards slow walking.

Ten days is the right amount of time. Long enough to feel each city rather than just check it off. Short enough that you come home wanting to go back.

Day by day Itinerary

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the busiest transit hubs in Asia — clear customs, collect your bags, and our representative will be waiting at the arrivals hall to transfer you directly to the hotel in the Silom district. The Furama Silom puts you in the business and entertainment heart of Bangkok, close to the BTS Skytrain and the Chao Phraya river piers. Tonight is unstructured — which is exactly right after 20+ hours of travel. The night markets and street food stalls around Silom Road are some of the best in Bangkok if you want to eat before sleeping.

After your journey, relax as we take care of your transfer to the hotel. Sit back and enjoy the first sights of this vibrant city — from bustling streets to gleaming temples. Your Bangkok adventure begins now!

This is the classic Bangkok day, done well. Your private guide picks you up after breakfast for a circuit that covers the city’s most significant sites. The Grand Palace complex is the anchor — the scale of it is genuinely surprising, and the Emerald Buddha inside Wat Phra Kaew is one of the most revered religious objects in Thailand. From there, Wat Pho’s massive reclining Buddha (46 meters long, gold-plated, and still manages to look serene) is a short walk away. A longtail boat takes you across the Chao Phraya to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, whose mosaic-covered spires are best seen from the water. The afternoon moves to Chinatown — Bangkok’s Yaowarat district is one of the most densely packed and photogenic neighborhoods in the city, and the gold shops, street food vendors, and herbal medicine stalls have been here for generations. Wat Traimit, with its solid gold Buddha statue, rounds out the day.

Morning checkout from the Bangkok hotel and transfer to Suvarnabhumi Airport for the short domestic flight to Phuket — about 1 hour 20 minutes. The island greets you differently than the city did: slower traffic, salt air, the sound of waves somewhere in the distance. Your hotel in Patong puts you on Phuket’s most animated beach strip — restaurants, bars, and the beach itself are all within walking distance. Tonight is yours. Bangla Road is Patong’s famous entertainment street if you want the full experience; Surin Beach and Kata Noi are quieter alternatives if you prefer to start with something calmer.

After breakfast, embark on an exciting speedboat excursion to the stunning Phi Phi Islands. Explore the highlights of the archipelago, including Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay, Loh Samah Bay, and Khai Island. Enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Pileh Lagoon, visit the famous Monkey Beach, and admire the breathtaking limestone cliffs and tropical scenery. A delicious lunch is included during the tour. Return to Phuket in the late afternoon and spend the evening at leisure.

Morning transfer to Phuket International Airport for the international flight to Ho Chi Minh City — approximately 2 hours. Landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport is your first encounter with Vietnam: louder, faster, and more chaotic than Thailand in the best way. The city’s energy hits immediately. Transfer to the Harmony Saigon Hotel & Spa in the District 1 area, which puts you close to Ben Thanh Market, the Reunification Palace, and the main French colonial landmarks of central Saigon. Tonight, if you have the energy: grab a plastic stool at a sidewalk pho place and eat like a local.

This is not a standard sightseeing tour and that is precisely the point. Instead of a bus moving between landmarks, you’re on the back of a motorbike with a local guide navigating Ho Chi Minh City’s 9 million motorbikes with complete ease. The route goes through the city’s hidden alleyways — narrow residential lanes stacked with daily life that you’d never find on a map. The coffee stop is one of the genuinely memorable moments: a cafe that has been running for 80 years, tucked into a building that time has left alone, where you learn to make Vietnamese egg coffee (ca phe trung) alongside the owner. The War Remnants Museum is not on this tour but is an easy independent visit in the afternoon — it is one of the most important historical sites in the country and worth 2 hours of your time.

A full day to move at your own pace. Some of the best things to do independently: the Reunification Palace (the former South Vietnamese presidential headquarters, frozen in time since April 30, 1975), Ben Thanh Market for fabric, lacquerware, and Vietnamese snacks, the Notre-Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office in the colonial district, or a half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels if you want to understand the wartime history of the region more deeply — the tunnels are about 40km from the city center and require a separate booking. In the evening, Bui Vien Walking Street is Vietnam’s most famous backpacker street and worth an hour even if you are not a backpacker.

The flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi takes about 2 hours, covering the length of the country north to south. Hanoi and Saigon are rivals in the way that New York and Los Angeles are — each city has strong opinions about the other. Hanoi is older, quieter, and more overtly Vietnamese in its character: the French colonial imprint is heavier here, the lakes are central to daily life, and the Old Quarter has a medieval street plan that dates back to the 13th century. Transfer to the Hanoi Royal Premium Hotel in Lo Su Street, right in the heart of the Old Quarter. Tonight, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake as the sun goes down — locals do this every evening.

The Hanoi tour starts with the Ba Dinh District, where Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum stands in a large ceremonial square — the building is open to visitors on most mornings (closed for annual maintenance in October/November). The One Pillar Pagoda, built in 1049 on a single stone column rising from a lotus pond, is just steps away. The Temple of Literature is the most atmospheric stop on the tour: Vietnam’s first university, founded in 1070, a complex of courtyards, pavilions, and stelae recording the names of doctoral graduates going back centuries. The afternoon moves to the Old Quarter, where 36 narrow streets are each historically associated with a specific trade — Hang Gai (silk), Hang Bac (silver), Hang Ma (paper) — and still mostly sell exactly those things today.

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the beautiful city of Hanoi. Check out from your hotel and enjoy a comfortable transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Depart with wonderful memories of your journey through Thailand and Vietnam, filled with vibrant cities, cultural landmarks, and unforgettable experiences.

Quick Answers!

Yes — US passport holders can apply for a Vietnam e-Visa you can contact our team and this visa grants a 90-day stay (single or multiple entry). You apply online, upload your passport photo and bio page, and receive approval by email — usually within 3 business days. We strongly recommend applying at least a week before your trip. Print a copy to show at the airport.

No visa is required for US passport holders visiting Thailand. As of late 2024, Americans receive a visa-exemption stamp on arrival valid for 60 days — no application, no fee. Just a valid US passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity and a return or onward flight booking. Always confirm the latest requirements at travel.state.gov before you depart, as policies can change.

You'll need the following for a smooth entry into both countries:
  • Valid US passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your return date
  • Printed or digital copy of your Vietnam e-Visa approval letter
  • Hotel confirmation for your first night in Thailand (sometimes requested at Thai immigration)
  • Return or onward flight ticket (may be checked at border)
  • Travel insurance documents (recommended — see below)
  • VacationOtrips booking confirmation with all flight and hotel details

Yes. VacationOtrips offers interest-free monthly installment plans. You can lock in your dates and today's pricing now and spread the payments over time at zero interest. Payment plan details are confirmed during the booking process — contact us or request a quote to get started

Yes, this package is available for solo travelers. The per-person price is based on double occupancy, so solo travelers may be subject to a single supplement fee for hotel rooms. Contact us for exact solo pricing before booking.

We recommend booking at least 3 to 4 months in advance, especially for travel between November and April (the peak season for both Thailand and Vietnam). Flights within Southeast Asia sell out and prices rise significantly closer to travel dates. Booking early also gives you time to apply for your Vietnam e-Visa without any last-minute stress.

Yes. This is a structured package but we work with travelers to customize it. Common modifications include adding nights in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, extending Phuket for more beach time, or adding a Ha Long Bay cruise day trip from Hanoi. Contact us with your preferences and we'll build a custom quote.

It's one of our best packages for first-timers to Southeast Asia. All the logistics are handled — flights, hotels, transfers, and guided tours in every city — so you don't need to figure anything out on your own. The four cities cover a range of experiences (mega-city Bangkok, island Phuket, electric Saigon, historic Hanoi) that together give you a real understanding of the region. English is widely spoken in tourist areas across both countries.

Yes — daily breakfast at your hotel is included throughout all 9 nights of the trip. Lunch and dinner are on your own except where specifically noted in the inclusions (the Phi Phi Islands day trip includes lunch).

Two different currencies, two different strategies:
  • Thailand (Thai Baht): Use ATMs for the best exchange rate. Bangkok and Phuket have ATMs everywhere. Avoid airport exchange counters — the rates are poor. Most 7-Elevens in Thailand have ATMs that accept foreign cards.
  • Vietnam (Vietnamese Dong): ATMs are the best option in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Carry some small bills for street food and markets — vendors often can't break large notes. The currency looks confusing at first (25,000 VND is about $1 USD) so double-check amounts before paying.
  • Universal tip: Notify your US bank before departure that you'll be using your card in Thailand and Vietnam. Multi-country trips frequently trigger fraud holds on US accounts.
  • Credit cards: Accepted at hotels, most restaurants, and larger shops. Street food stalls and local markets are cash only.

Southeast Asia packing basics:
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing — both countries are hot and humid year-round. Linen and moisture-wicking fabrics work well.
  • A light layer or packable jacket — air conditioning in hotels, restaurants, and domestic flights in Thailand and Vietnam is often set very cold.
  • Comfortable walking shoes — you'll be on your feet for hours on the city tours.
  • Slip-on shoes — temple visits require removing footwear frequently. Flip-flops or sandals make this much easier.
  • Modest clothing for temple visits — shoulders and knees should be covered at Thai temples and Vietnamese pagodas. A light scarf works as a versatile cover-up.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent — both are available locally but quality varies.
  • A universal power adapter — Thailand uses Type A/B/C sockets; Vietnam uses Type A/C. US plugs generally work in Thailand without an adapter; Vietnam may need one.
  • A small day bag for tours and excursions.

Street food is some of the best food in both countries and millions of travelers eat it daily without issue. A few practical rules: eat at stalls with high turnover (lots of locals eating there is always a good sign), avoid raw vegetables if your stomach is sensitive, go for freshly cooked items rather than things sitting out, and drink bottled water throughout. The motorbike city tour in Ho Chi Minh City specifically includes a street food and coffee experience — your guide will take you to places that are both delicious and safe.

All four cities share the same or similar time zones, which makes this trip easier to adjust to:
  • Bangkok & Phuket: UTC+7 (Indochina Time)
  • Ho Chi Minh City & Hanoi: UTC+7 (same as Thailand)
  • US East Coast: UTC+7 is 11 hours ahead (e.g., 8am Bangkok = 9pm previous day in New York)
  • US West Coast: UTC+7 is 14 hours ahead
  • The consistent time zone across all cities means no adjustment between destinations — just one jet lag to manage at the start.
