Tour Guide
Spain and Portugal sit at the southwestern edge of Europe, and most Americans who visit for the first time have the same reaction: why did it take me this long to come here?
This 9-day trip covers three cities that are close enough to move between efficiently but different enough that each one feels like a separate chapter. Barcelona is the outlier — architecturally unlike any city in Europe, Catalan in identity rather than conventionally Spanish, with beaches, Modernista masterpieces, and a food scene that operates around its own clock. Three nights here barely scratches the surface, but the Sagrada Familia guided tour and the private city circuit gives you a real foundation.
The high-speed AVE train delivers you to Madrid in less than three hours — and Madrid’s version of Europe is completely different. Wider boulevards, the serious weight of imperial history, the Prado museum anchoring the Golden Art Triangle, and a nightlife culture where dinner at 10pm is normal and restaurants stay open until 2am. The flamenco show on Day 6 is not a tourist gimmick here — it’s one of Madrid’s most authentic cultural exports.
Lisbon closes the trip perfectly. Portugal’s capital is the quietest of the three — smaller, hillier, weathered in ways that feel earned rather than neglected. The No. 28 tram rattling up through the Alfama neighborhood, the sound of Fado drifting from a doorway, the custard tarts from the original Pasteis de Belem bakery — Lisbon tends to surprise people who assumed it would be the lesser stop. It usually ends up being the favorite.
TRAVEL QUESTIONS?
Your private English-speaking driver meets you at Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) for the transfer to your 4-star hotel in the Eixample district — the city’s elegant late-19th century grid, designed with chamfered corners at every intersection to allow light and air to flow. Check in, decompress from the transatlantic flight, and let the city come to you. In the evening, walk down to the Magic Fountain of Montjuic for the light and music show — it runs on weekend evenings and select weekday nights, it’s free, and it’s a genuinely wonderful way to begin a trip to Barcelona. The fountain was built for the 1929 World Exhibition and the choreography still holds up.
Included meal: Breakfast
Spend the morning discovering some of Antoni Gaudí’s most famous works. In the afternoon, wander through the colorful Park Güell or explore the extraordinary Casa Milà.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxing stroll along Barcelona’s beaches and finish the day with a delicious dinner by the sea.
After breakfast, your private driver and guide pick you up for the 2-hour Barcelona city tour. The route threads through the city’s most architecturally distinct areas — the Gothic Quarter’s medieval alleyways, the wide modernista avenues of the Eixample, and the waterfront. You’ll see the Barcelona Cathedral facade up close (the Gothic original, not the later neo-Gothic addition), pass by Gaudi’s Casa Batllo and Casa Mila on Passeig de Gracia, and arrive at the Sagrada Familia for exterior photos and context before tomorrow’s guided interior visit. The tour continues to the Olympic Village — built for the 1992 Games that transformed Barcelona’s relationship with its coastline — the Columbus Monument at the port, and up to Montjuic for views over the city and port. Afternoon is free: Park Guell for Gaudi’s mosaic-covered terraces and city panoramas, or the Boqueria market for lunch.
Included meal: Breakfast
This morning’s guided tour of the Sagrada Familia interior is the highlight of Barcelona. Gaudi took over the project in 1883 and worked on it for 43 years until his death — he is buried in the crypt beneath the nave. The interior is unlike any other church in the world: the columns branch like trees toward the ceiling, the light changes color as it passes through the stained glass, and every surface carries symbolic detail that the guide makes legible.
Construction is ongoing and projected to complete around 2026 — the tower cranes have been part of the Barcelona skyline for most of living memory. After the tour, walk down Las Ramblas toward the port — the long, tree-lined pedestrian boulevard has street performers, flower stalls, and the entrance to the Boqueria. It is touristy but worth the walk. End the evening in the El Born neighborhood, Barcelona’s best area for dinner and bars.
The Sagrada Familia, located in the heart of Barcelona, has become one of the city’s—and the country’s—most iconic landmarks. Millions of visitors come each year, and many more study its architectural and religious significance.
A guide will lead you through the impressive interior, where the vaults soar 225 feet high. Designed by Antoni Gaudí in the shape of a Latin cross, the basilica features five richly decorated naves full of symbolism. You’ll also have the chance to visit the museum, which explores the fascinating history and development of this extraordinary church.
Included meal: Breakfast
After breakfast, transfer to Barcelona Sants station for the AVE high-speed train to Madrid Atocha. The journey takes about 2 hours 30 minutes through the Spanish interior — dry plateau, olive groves, and the occasional medieval hilltop town visible from the window. It is significantly more comfortable and scenic than flying between the two cities.
Arriving at Madrid Atocha, your transfer takes you to the hotel near Plaza de Espana. Madrid operates on a different time signature than Barcelona — later dinners, more traditional in its street culture, with wider avenues built for an empire. Tonight, the recommendation is La Latina: the neighborhood southeast of the Royal Palace, packed with tapas bars that have been open for generations. Order patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, jamón ibérico, and a glass of Rioja. The streets fill up properly around 9pm.
Included meal: Breakfast
The private 2-hour Madrid city tour covers the city’s imperial-era landmarks and grand public spaces. The Royal Palace (the largest royal palace in Western Europe by floor area, still used for state ceremonies) and its formal gardens at Sabatini and Campo del Moro.
The Church of San Francisco el Grande with its enormous dome. The neoclassical fountains of Paseo del Prado. Toledo Bridge over the Manzanares River. The Prado Museum’s exterior. Puerta de Alcala — the 18th-century triumphal arch that once marked the eastern entrance to the city.
The tour ends in the Austrias neighborhood around the Plaza Mayor, where you can walk the arcaded square and choose from the surrounding cafes and restaurants for lunch. In the afternoon, the Retiro Park rewards a slow hour or two: the boating lake, the rose garden in season, and the Palacio de Cristal — a cast iron and glass pavilion built in 1887 that now serves as an exhibition space for the Reina Sofia museum.
Enjoy a complete view of Madrid on a 2-hour tour around the city center in a comfortable car. Meet your driver at the hotel and take a panoramic sightseeing tour of the old part of Madrid. You’ll pass by the façade of the Royal Palace, the Sabatini Gardens, and Campo del Moro. You’ll also see the Church of San Francisco el Grande, the fountains of Paseo del Prado, the Toledo Bridge, the Prado Museum, and Puerta de Alcalá.
The tour finishes in the Austrias neighborhood, where you can stroll through its narrow streets and local shops, soaking up the historic atmosphere.
Included meal: Breakfast
The day is yours to spend in Madrid’s Golden Art Triangle — three of the world’s great art museums within walking distance of each other along Paseo del Prado. The Prado is the anchor: Velazquez’s Las Meninas, Goya’s Black Paintings, Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, El Greco’s Adoration of the Shepherds. Budget at least two hours; many people spend four. The Reina Sofia next door houses Picasso’s Guernica — the enormous anti-war painting created in response to the 1937 bombing of the Basque town, still one of the most powerful canvases anywhere.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza fills the gaps: Impressionists, Renaissance portraits, American art, Pop Art. In the evening, your included flamenco show: live guitar, singing, and dance in an intimate Madrid venue — this is the genuine article, not a tourist production. One drink is included; the performance typically runs 60 to 90 minutes.
Included meal: Breakfast
Private transfer to Madrid Barajas Airport for the short flight to Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport — about 1 hour 20 minutes. A private chauffeur meets you at arrivals and takes you to your boutique hotel in central Lisbon. The shift from Madrid to Lisbon is immediately noticeable: the scale drops, the hills rise, and the city feels intimate in a way that neither Barcelona nor Madrid does.
Once checked in, the recommendation is to board Tram 28 near Martim Moniz and ride it all the way to its terminus in the Estrela district — or get off and walk at any point that catches your eye. The tram passes through Graca, Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, and Estrela, climbing and descending Lisbon’s hills on tracks laid in 1930. It is slow, crowded at peak times, and completely worthwhile.
Included meal: Breakfast
The half-day guided Lisbon tour heads west to Belem, the riverside district where Vasco da Gama’s fleet departed for India in 1498 and where the city’s Age of Discovery monuments are concentrated. The Jeronimos Monastery is the masterpiece: pure Manueline style, a Portuguese architectural form that combines late Gothic structure with maritime and nautical decorative motifs — rope carvings, armillary spheres, coral forms — built from the profits of the spice trade. Da Gama himself is buried here. The Belem Tower, a small fortified tower built on a platform in the Tagus, appears on half the Portuguese souvenirs in existence for good reason.
The Monument to the Discoveries shows Portugal’s explorers in a prow-shaped sculpture overlooking the river. After the tour, the afternoon is free in the Alfama — the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, with a labyrinthine street plan that survived the 1755 earthquake because it sits on bedrock rather than the reclaimed land that collapsed. Walk uphill to the Sao Jorge Castle miradouro for the view, then follow the sound of Fado from whichever doorway offers it.
Set against the scenic backdrop of the Tagus River, explore Lisbon’s rich history and vibrant traditions as you visit iconic monuments celebrating Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. See the historic Belém Tower, the impressive Monument to the Discoveries, and the stunning Jerónimos Monastery (closed on Mondays). You’ll also tour the majestic Ajuda National Palace—or, on Wednesdays, the Royal Treasury Museum.
Continue your journey with a digital walking tour through the charming neighborhoods of Alfama and Baixa-Chiado, where the soulful sounds of Fado music echo around every corner. This tour offers the perfect introduction to Lisbon’s fascinating history, captivating architecture, and warm culture.
Private transfer to Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) for your return flight home. If your flight is in the afternoon, there’s time for one last pastel de nata — the custard tart invented at the Pasteis de Belem bakery in 1837, still made to the original recipe, still the best version available anywhere. The bakery is a 5-minute walk from the Jeronimos Monastery.
